Teddy Bear Coats

I feel a coat theme coming on… Not only have I discussed pea coats today but I’m now thinking of the perfect teddy bear coat too.

Teddy bear coats generally resemble a giant teddy bear in terms of the fabric and its texture. I think they can look amazing on the right person and awful on some but it’s a big trend for AW’12-13 and it’s one that I really want to embrace.

To do it properly you have to be prepared to invest heavily. Teddy bear coats are generally made from shearling or angora with some even pushing the boundaries by coming in rabbit. A vintage version is probably the cheapest option but the smell of vintage shearling is enough to make me run for the bank to obtain an over-inflated loan!

Below is a selection of coats I have found online… I think the Alexander McQueen one is a strong contender although Margiela and Richard James have also produced some pretty nice versions that should definitely be considered.

Alexander McQueen – £3,995 from Mr Porter

Richard James – £1,325 from Mr Porter

Maison Martin Margiela – £3,525 from Selfridges

Making A Case For The Pea Coat

The pea coat can trace its roots back to the 1720s when American newspapers referenced the jacket in their news coverage. The style has a functional aesthetic whilst also providing a more practical alternative to long and sometimes in-cumbersome overcoats.

I have lusted after a good-quality pea coat ever since the Burberry Prorsum AW’10-11 menswear show that took massive inspiration from military tailoring. The cut of the Prorsum coat was impeccable and the weight of the fabric made it a true winter coat.

I have searched high and low ever since and struggled to find anything that comes close to the look and quality of the Prorsum number.

I think I have finally found something that may well do the trick. The Prorsum coat retailed at around £2,000 whereas this Reiss version is a cool £275. Although the Reiss version doesn’t come with chunky gold buttons, epaulets or cuff detailing the cut of the fabric is flattering and the weight is very suitable for the harsh winters we’ve come accustomed to.

I tried the coat on today in both colours but can’t decide which one I prefer. As some of my regular readers will know, I very rarely buy from the high-street and so I’m not 100% sure if I should fork out £275 or hold out for a Prorsum coat at the Hackney outlet… I’m also half-tempted to try my luck in an army surplus store to see if I can find an authentic pea coat at a fraction of the price.

Alternatively, if someone feels like treating me then feel free to pick me up either colour in a medium! Both coats are available online and in Reiss stores nationwide.

I shall keep you posted about my pea coat search as and when it unfolds!

Nike Air Max 90 Hyperfuse

I am a big fan of the Nike Hyperfuse range. After all, I already own the Air Force One Hi-Tops from a previous collection in bright neon yellow!

These Air Max 90s were too cool to overlook. I love the fact that the colour-scheme is more wearable than my Air Force One Hi-Tops thus making them a great investment.

Now, I just need to find a few cool outfits to wear them with.

Acne Chunky-Knit Wool Jumper

I love a nice piece of knitwear and this Acne chunky-knit is perfect for the coming change of seasons.

It looks so warm and embracing and the colour is suitably fresh for a menswear staple.

Patrik Ervell x ALDO RISE AW’12 Viral

For AW’12 ALDO RISE has collaborated with New York-based designer Patrik Ervell on a range of mens and womens styles.

To mark the launch, Ervell has worked with director M Blash to produce a viral video that promotes the collection in a cool, understated way. The video takes inspiration from sci-fi classics including Ridley Scott’s ‘Bladerunner’ as well as Chris Marker’s ‘La Jetée’.

Ervell has utilised vulcanised rubber, lending a harsh but practical aesthetic to his designs. The shoes will be available from select ALDO stores worldwide. I am a particular fan of the leather ankle boot. Perfect for the coming change of season.

The video can also be viewed by clicking here.

Marios Schwab SS’13 Backstage

I was extremely lucky to get backstage access today to the Marios Schwab SS’13 show taking place during London Fashion Week.

The collection was incredible with a gothic aesthetic running throughout. I also loved the heavily embellished pieces in tulles and organzas. I’ve never shot backstage before so you’ll have to excuse me if some of my images aren’t that great!

Thom Browne Baseball Jacket

I adore Thom Browne and his quirky sensibility and I love the fact that Mr Porter have started stocking some of his pieces.

The cut and finish of his garments is second-to-none and in my opinion he is one of the best menswear designers currently available. I already own a pair of basketball-esque shorts from his SS’12 collection and I think this cotton baseball jacket with leather sleeves would fit perfectly in my wardrobe.

Now, I just need to find £995 and said jacket can be mine!

Anna Dello Russo for H&M Promo Video

I LOVE Anna Dello Russo’s style and the fact that she has worked on a collaboration with H&M firmly cements her position in the fashion industry. She is a force to be reckoned with and this promo video released by H&M for her new collection MAJORLY demonstrates this.

Only Anna can pull off a super short PVC dress whilst frolicking around on a massive gold shoe! The rules that she reels off are also so Anna.

Definitely watch this video and DEFINITELY start following Anna’s blog here.

I have decided to launch a new project on tumblr. My new page will exclusively feature streetstyle images taken by myself on the streets of London as well as other cities that I may visit in the future.

The site can be visited by clicking here.

I will endeavour to update this site as often as possible but I would highly recommend checking out my new tumblr and following its updates on a near daily basis!
